In general, people who have experienced whiplash suffer from whiplash symptoms for three months or less. After three months it is possible for an occasional headache or minor neck pain. Then there are those whiplash injury sufferers who will sustain moderate pain in the upper back, neck and numbness in extremities for periods lasting up to years into the future.
For those patients who experience symptoms of whiplash up to six months after the initial injury, the name given to their injury is Late Whiplash Syndrome. The existence of LWS was for many years denied by insurance companies who looked to defend compensation claims and to this day is still the case for some. However, our Doctors of Chiropractic at All Injury Rehab & Chiropractic understand the pain and discomfort that Late Whiplash Syndrome patients are experiencing and will work with our patients to support the compensation claims should the need be necessary.
Late Whiplash Syndrome Symptoms
Studies have shown that the symptoms of Late Whiplash Syndrome were patterns in the type of pain and discomfort that the chiropractic patients were experiencing. Neck pain and headaches are very common among all sufferers. Stress and Depression are also symptoms of Late Whiplash Syndrome for some people. Better than half, nearly 60% of all patients, suffer from anxiety and irritability, while half suffer from depression.
Diagnosing Late Whiplash Pain
It is believed that the C2-C3 facet joint in the neck may be responsible for many typical Late Whiplash Syndrome symptoms. Use of anesthetic at the joint revealed that it was responsible for half of headaches reported by patients, and together with lower joints may well be the reason for the neck, arm and shoulder pain felt by Late Whiplash Syndrome patients.
The pain produced by the facet joint is also found to influence levels of concentration, memory, weakness or heaviness in the joints, dizziness, visual disturbance, and back pain. These are all common symptoms of whiplash injury. When this joint was treated with anesthetic, these symptoms were relieved.
