Whiplash is defined as an injury to the neck that occurs as a result of severe acceleration and deceleration commonly associated with a car accident. The most common type of accident is the rear impact accident where the vehicle gets hit from behind. The occupants of the impacted vehicle are at the greatest risk of injury, including whiplash.

What We Now Know About Whiplash

Due to the large number of whiplash cases, the insurance and legal issues surrounding these cases, and the combination of whiplash with other injuries, has left the subject of whiplash very suspect.

However, recent studies have shown that victims of high velocity impacts do in fact experience extensive whiplash injuries. This research has helped the advancement of whiplash treatment and chiropractic care.

What Causes Whiplash

Whiplash occurs when the cervical spine rapidly accelerates and decelerates due to an impact. When a whiplash accident occurs, the lower part of the cervical spine moves well beyond its normal range of motion, causing the potential for injury to the ligaments and discs in that area. The upper part of the cervical spine also moves beyond its normal range of motion, but to a lesser extent.

Low Impact Whiplash

Don't be fooled! Just because an accident was low impact and other damage or injuries were not sustained, whiplash is still very possible. In reality, low impacts accidents can produce higher dynamic loading on the cervical spine.
